Choosing Joy in Uncertain Times: Why Community Matters More Than Ever

Choosing Joy in Uncertain Times: Why Community Matters More Than Ever

There are moments when the world feels especially heavy.

Back in December, I felt a strong pull to host a gathering to mark the launch of our Spring collection. It felt important to create space for connection, beauty, and celebration. But as the new year unfolded, with devastating fires in Los Angeles, political uncertainty, and a general sense of unease in the air, I questioned whether hosting an event still made sense. In times like these, joy can feel almost out of place.

After sitting with that feeling, I realized something simple but grounding. More than one thing can be true at the same time. The world can feel heavy, and we can still choose joy. In fact, those moments often ask for it the most.

At Elisamama, we have always believed in the power of gathering. In slowing down. In bringing women together in ways that feel human and meaningful. So we moved forward, not to ignore what was happening around us, but to create a small pocket of light within it.

And that is exactly what the day became.

For a few hours, women came together to connect, laugh, and meet one another. We watched our mamas slip into pieces from the Spring collection, each dress taking on a life of its own. We spent time creating wearable floral arrangements, hands busy, conversations flowing. There was joy in the making, and ease in the togetherness.

There was also play. We danced, we dressed up, and we laughed harder than expected. We even put together a playful reel inspired by Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime performance, a moment that reminded us not to take ourselves too seriously. What stayed with me most was the feeling in the room. For a brief moment, we stepped away from the noise. We chose presence. We chose creativity. We chose each other.

It was a reminder that community still matters. That joy does not disappear during difficult times, it simply becomes more intentional. And that making space for beauty, friendship, and connection is never trivial.
